I think this is because new things make me feel inadequate. I used to work as a secondhand clothes buyer so got to fulfil my needy impulses most days. Now I don't do that, I find myself wandering into places and becoming so excited I lose all rationality. Bashed up Bobby Brown tape for 10p? I'll be having that.
