"Video Quartet" By Christian Marclay

Although it's slightly preposterous to single out a piece of art as an absolute favorite, mine would have to be Christian Marclay's "Video Quartet", which is and installation comprised of four screens simultaneously playing clips from numerous films, edited together to make a kind of symphony of horns, whistles, vocalizations, taps, strings and any other sound Marclay manages to include.
I first saw the video quartet on a glum day while living in San Francisco, at the Museum Of Modern Art. It's one of those rare works that is equally understandable to a four year old and a forty year old. One of the constants in my life, has always been that any time I walk into a record store or a library or an art gallery, I'm always on the look out for something that will save my life, either instantaneously or on a rainy-day, and well, the video quartet was exactly that: musical, charming, humorous, awe-inspiring and above all else--entertaining, which I find is an adjective that should be encouraged more in the art world. (Christian Marclay's "Video Quartet" is currently in the Tate Modern's permanent collection) -jva

"Discover America" By Van Dyke Parks

I dream of being seaside with "Discover America" blaring out of a boombox. Only Van Dykes Parks could get away with doing a Calypso album littered with references to U.S. history. And oddly enough it's the appropriation of Calypso that makes it about a million times more American than any saccharine ballad performed by a pop singer in front of a flag. -jva

"Franny and Zooey" By J.D. Salinger

I've always been fascinated by the whole Glass family saga, and while their story is riddled with grief and neurosis, it's also filled with humor, absurdity and especially in "Franny & Zooey", a strange kind of optimism. I've reread this book more than any other I've read, which either stands as a testimony to the book or my own laziness at seeking out new things to read (or possibly both). - jva

Silver Apples - Self-Titled

Before this album, I didn't get prog. Then this whirry little beauty caught my fancy, all downbeat experimentia and lyrics about pox and computer programmes.
Even the back cover photo, of the two dudes with serious expressions, far-out hair and further-out shirts tells me I so, so want to listen to this every day. - sdw

All things retro

I think this is because new things make me feel inadequate. I used to work as a secondhand clothes buyer so got to fulfil my needy impulses most days. Now I don't do that, I find myself wandering into places and becoming so excited I lose all rationality. Bashed up Bobby Brown tape for 10p? I'll be having that. One day the stockpiles of old crap will dry up from over-use. One day...

Tea & the papers
The great leveller of our times. You either do or you don't, but the weekend isn't the weekend for me without lashings of tea and any written words I can lay my hands on.
